FFL Transfers at Gary's Gun Shop
Hassle-free firearm transfers in Sioux Falls, SD since 1992
What Is an FFL Transfer?
When you purchase a firearm online from another retailer, the seller is required by federal law to ship it to a licensed firearms dealer (FFL) near you. The FFL holder then processes the required background check and paperwork before releasing the firearm to you. Gary's Gun Shop is a fully licensed Federal Firearms Licensee and has been handling transfers for customers in the Sioux Falls area for over 30 years.
Our FFL Transfer Process
- Contact us before your purchase — Call us at (605) 361-5897 or email us to let us know a transfer is coming. We'll provide our FFL information to send to the seller.
- Seller ships the firearm to us — Give the online seller our FFL details. They will ship the firearm directly to Gary's Gun Shop at 905 W. 41st St, Sioux Falls, SD 57105.
- We notify you when it arrives — Once we receive your firearm, we'll call you to schedule your pickup.
- Complete the paperwork — Visit us in store to fill out ATF Form 4473 and complete the NICS background check. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID (South Dakota driver's license or state ID preferred).
- Take your firearm home — Once the background check clears, you walk out with your new firearm. Most transfers are completed the same day.
FFL Transfer Fees
Our standard FFL transfer fee is $25 per firearm. This covers receiving, logging, secure storage, background check processing, and all required federal paperwork. No hidden fees.
What to Bring
- Valid government-issued photo ID (must match the name on the purchase)
- South Dakota Enhanced Concealed Carry Permit (if you have one — may expedite the process)
- Purchase confirmation or receipt from the online seller
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the transfer take?
Most transfers are completed in one visit once the firearm arrives at our shop. The NICS background check typically takes just a few minutes. In rare cases, a delayed response may require a short wait (usually resolved within 1–3 business days).
Can you transfer any type of firearm?
We can transfer handguns, rifles, shotguns, and most NFA items. All transfers must comply with federal, state, and local laws. South Dakota residents must be 21 to receive a handgun transfer and 18 for long guns.
Do I need to be a South Dakota resident?
We can process transfers for South Dakota residents and residents of contiguous states (Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana) for long guns, per federal law. Handgun transfers require South Dakota residency.
What if my background check is delayed?
If you receive a “Delayed” status from NICS, we will securely store your firearm at no additional charge while the check is being processed. You do not need to pay any extra storage fees.
Can I have multiple firearms shipped in one transfer?
Yes. Each firearm shipped in the same package from the same seller counts as one transfer. Multiple firearms from different sellers are charged separately.
