In 1873, the Colt single-action Army (SAA) revolver was adopted as the official sidearm of the Army. Cavalry soldiers were equipped with these innovative revolvers, which quickly gained popularity among both law enforcement and outlaws, earning the moniker “Peacemaker.”
The most common version of the single-action Army featured a color case-hardened frame paired with a blued barrel. A nickel-plated variant was specifically issued to Indian scouts, while a bright charcoal blue finish was also available directly from the factory. Over time, these classic revolvers developed a distinctive soft gray patina from years of handling. All these timeless finishes can be found in the 1873 Cattleman model.
